Read, Read, Read To Succeed!
I strongly encourage students to READ at least 20 minutes a day. They may read to you or you may read to them. Have children identify "snap words" that they should know in a "snap", and spell them to you. This will help them become a better reader and writer.
In kindergarten, we learn how to S-t-r-e-t-c-h words out from the beginning to the middle and end. In class, we also learn how to "Chunk Words". To "Chunk Words" means we look for mini words inside the "big" word to help us discover words quickly. This helps children decode words at a rapid rate and increase fluency in their reading.
Students enjoy taking "Book Walks" before reading the story. We like to tell a story and make predictions before and while we are reading the story. This makes reading fun and enjoyable and exercises our brain and imagination.
Discussing the book and re-telling the story also strengthens children's comprehension skills. This is a very important skill that children seem to have difficulty mastering at such a young age. Children need to be able to know the characters, the setting, and details in order from the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story. Being able to read fluently, decode words, and comprehend what one is reading is the goal in being a successful reader.
In addition to reading fun stories, children also enjoy being exposed to all types of literature including: nursery rhymes, magazines, newspapers, fairy tales, and poetry to name a few.
HAPPY READING!!!
